East Bound and Down

you got your ears on?

Just looking through a few new articles on my feed reader and one pops up with a YouTube video of Jerry Donahue playing his Telecaster and describing how his technique came about, which he shows by playing “The Claw”.

It brought back some memories as it was from a Channel 4 Equinox episode about the guitar, imaginatively entitled “Twang, Bang, Kerang” broadcast in 1987, which I taped at the time and still have and watched over and over again to pickup some playing tips and to marvel over Andy Summers huge rack – oo-er missus.

At the time I didn’t know the tune Donahue was playing was an actual known track, just figured it was some improv, certainly didn’t know it was a track by Cledus “Snowman” Snow aka Jerry Reed.

Now I knew Reed sang and acted, as Smokey And The Bandit was my favourite film but didn’t know he was a guitar legend.

Funnily around the same time and on the same channel they had a show, can’t remember at all what it was called, that used the track “Guitar Man” by Elvis as it’s theme tune which of course I didn’t know was another of Jerry’s tracks, with the man himself playing on it.

Anyway after that blast from the past the boys are thirsty in Atlanta and there’s beer in Texarkana so I’m…

East bound and down, loaded up and truckin’,
We gonna do what they say can’t be done.
We’ve got a long way to go and a short time to get there.
I’m east bound, just watch ol’ “Bandit” run…
